Why wiki independence matters
When you look up a Roblox game online, you are usually looking for answers like what an item does, where do I find something, or what changed in the last update. Fan wikis exist to give you that. A wiki should first and foremost be a comprehensive, informative resource for the community.
That sounds obvious. In practice, who hosts the wiki can decide whether it stays that way.
When the host puts profit first
Wiki companies like Fandom have taken millions of dollars from private investors, venture capitalists, and private equity firms. Investors want returns. Independent wiki operators argue that this leads to investor appeasement being prioritized over user experience.
The results are hard to miss if you have spent time on a Fandom wiki lately. Overbearing advertisement, blatant disrespect for wiki contributors, lack of customisation, and exploitative, hostile migration policies for communities that try to leave in hopes of a friendlier place, like Miraheze.
Many editors and readers consider it unacceptable. Wiki staff deserve the ability to control what they create and how it is displayed. That belief is why the Independent Roblox Wiki Alliance exists.
What independence looks like
Independence does not mean every wiki runs alone on its own server, though some do. The Independent Roblox Wiki Alliance fully supports independently hosted wikis and wikis on transparent farms like Miraheze, which they describe as a non-profit, ad-free alternative that allows a wiki to be fully controlled by its staff.
The point is governance. Editors choose their policies, their presentation, and their direction without a corporate platform setting the rules to protect ad revenue. It is a choice that should be made by the community, not the platform.
Independence is work, and worth asking about
Leaving a corporate host is not a flip of a switch.
For wikis still on Fandom and curious about moving, her advice is direct: "Don't at all be afraid to get in touch. It's a big change, but I think it's definitely worth it in the long run. Come poke around and ask questions and get people's opinions. There's a lot to get used to and a lot of work to do for changing wiki hosts, but it's easier with people behind you and with advice from people who've done it before."
Miraheze Monthly's tech tips section that month pointed readers toward guides on moving a wiki to Miraheze, including advice written specifically for teams coming from Fandom.
Why this matters if you only read wikis
You do not need to be an editor to care about this. The wiki you bookmark today might carry more ads tomorrow, lose a feature you relied on, or split into competing versions after a migration fight. Independent wikis are often run by the same players who love the game, but on terms those players chose.
If a game you play has both a corporate wiki and an independent one, it is worth checking both. Pages may differ in freshness, tone, or depth depending on which community stayed active.
If you do edit, your time and knowledge are the wiki. Hosts that treat contributors as an afterthought make that work harder to sustain. Hosts that hand control to the people writing the pages make it easier to build something worth returning to.
